The Transcendental Meditation Program

"Transcendental Meditation®opens the awareness to the infinite reservoir of energy, creativity, and intelligence that lies deep within everyone."

—Maharishi Mahesh Yogi

About the Transcendental Meditation Program

The Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique is a simple, natural, effortless mental technique that is practiced for 15 to 20 minutes twice a day, while sitting comfortably with the eyes closed. During practice of the TM technique, the mind settles down to a quiet yet fully awake state of awareness while the body experiences deep rest and relaxation. It is a combination of the mind settling down and the body settling down that produces the many benefits that one derives from the practice.

The TM Program is Unique

Its principles and practices are fundamentally different and distinct from any other form of meditation or mental or physical discipline available today. During the 40 years that the TM technique has been taught world wide, over 5 million people of all ages, professions, and religions have started the practice with half of them right here in the United States.

Research on the TM Program

More than 500 research studies have been conducted on the effects of the Transcendental Meditation technique at 210 independent universities and research institutes in 33 countries. Hundreds of these studies have been published in leading scientific journals including Science, Scientific American, and the American Heart Association's journal, Hypertension.

The Benefits

Scientific research has shown that the TM technique produces a wide range of benefits including:

+ better health
+ clearer, more creative thinking
+ reduced stress and stress related illness
+ younger biological age
+ increased happiness
+ increased self-actualization
+ more rewarding relationships

What the TM Program is Not

The Transcendental Meditation technique does not involve concentration or control of the mind. It is not a religion, philosophy, or lifestyle, nor does it involve a code of conduct or moral training, a value system, belief or worship.

How the TM Program is Taught

The Transcendental Meditation technique is taught through a seven-step course of instruction by a qualified teacher of the TM program. The last four steps (Day One -- Day Four) must be taken as four consecutive days.

2. Preparatory Lecture: The Mechanics and Origin of the TM Technique (1 hour)
3. Personal Interview: Interview with a qualified TM Program Teacher (10 min)
